Key Assets opens its doors in Bunbury to help vulnerable children

Children’s services provider, Key Assets has officially opened its office in Bunbury, providing vulnerable children and young people in the region with safe and stable homes.

Key Assets Director, Judith Wilkinson says more than 4,500 children need care and protection in WA and there is a desperate need for foster carers in the South-West region.

“We are calling for more foster carers in the South West to look after vulnerable children and young people.

“We need people who can provide a safe and nurturing home for children whose parents are struggling to provide safe care.”

“We are also looking for people who are willing to become an ability carer and provide a supportive home to a young person living with a disability,” Ms Wilkinson said.

If you are over 25 and you have a spare room, you can apply to become a foster carer or an Ability Carer with Key Assets.

Kerry and Louise Torkington have been fostering with Key Assets for over two years. Suffering from empty nest syndrome she and her husband decided they had room in both their hearts and their home to become carers.

“It was an easy decision for us, we had room with our children moving out so it was the perfect time to give some children a fulfilling childhood.

“Our fostering experience has been both rewarding and challenging, but overall it has been extremely fulfilling.

“When our last foster siblings were re-united with their mother, the joy of seeing them so happy and knowing that it was a good outcome was a wonderful feeling.

“Key Assets provides us with on-going support and training, as well as a dedicated social worker which has been a huge help.

“Anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer, go for it. It could be the best decision you ever make. It was for us,” Ms. Torkington said.
