Who Can Foster in Tasmania? | Key Assets Australia

1800 we care

Our foster carers come from all walks of life; they’re all different, just like the children and young people they care for.

There are no restrictions as to who can foster based on race, cultural identity, sexual orientation, home ownership status or income – the most important thing to us is your ability to provide a safe, caring and supportive environment for children and young people.

Having said this, there are a few criteria that we recommend all potential foster carers consider before applying:

  • We ask that you are over 25 years old
  • Have a spare bedroom for each child placed with you (unless siblings are placed together)
  • Are able to make a full-time commitment as a foster carer
  • Have a genuine enthusiasm for helping children and young people
  • Have an understanding of the difference between looking after your own birth children and caring for a child from another family
  • Be aware that fostering will have an impact on your own children and extended family
  • Are able to cope in difficult and sometimes stressful situations

Rewarding our foster carers

We understand the financial implications of fostering and so we provide all our foster carers with fostering allowances to cover the cost of caring for children.
