The children we foster at Key Assets Fostering may have experienced difficulties and have serious problems as a result. Their complex needs are likely to make considerable demands on their foster carers.
As a consequence of the trauma, neglect or rejection they have experienced, the children we foster can express their emotions through difficult or challenging behaviour. This can include tantrums, withdrawal, aggression, clinginess, rejection or over-compliance.
Other foster children may act older or younger than their years or, as a result of placement breakdowns or living with many different foster carers, may not know what is expected of them. Some can find it difficult to develop trusting relationships with adults.
Older foster children may also have developed drinking or drug taking habits as a result of their experiences.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander foster children are extremely over represented in the out of home care system in Australia.
According to the Department for Child Protection, in 2011 there were over 3,500 foster children in Western Australia. Of these, around 45% were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
We are hoping to offer these foster children a safe and stable home in which their cultural heritage can be promoted. Where possible, we seek to match Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children with foster carers of the same descent. When we are unable to do this, we aim to provide comprehensive training for our non-Aboriginal foster carers.
