Foster care placements

The term ‘foster care placements’ refers to the type of arrangement made to place a child or young person with a foster family.

At Key Assets Fostering, our foster care placements are often specialist and involve caring for children and young people with complex needs or difficult behaviours. We recruit foster carers who are able to offer foster care placements to children and young people who may have experienced harm or neglect and whose parents may be struggling with their own lives.

The types of foster care placements

We encourage our foster carers to take more than one type of foster care placement, although carers are often matched with the most appropriate type of placements. See below for a list of the most common foster care placements we undertake.

Emergency foster care placements

Involves caring for children who need somewhere safe to stay immediately, usually for a few nights or weeks. These placements are often unplanned and can be for individual children or sibling groups.

Short term foster care placements

Involves looking after children or young people for a few months until difficulties at home are resolved or alternative care plans are made for their future.

Long term foster care placements

Involves caring for children generally over one year, and possibly for varying lengths of time, until they reach the age of independence and are ready to support themselves.

Parent and Child Assessment foster care placements

Involves carers looking after a parent and her/his child/ren or a young woman who is pregnant. These carers are provided with additional professional training. Key Assets Fostering is looking to provide these types of placements in the future.
