'Foster parenting'

Across the world, the term ‘foster carer’ is referred to using a variety of different terminology. In Western Australia, we use the term ‘foster carer’ as it better reflects the role of caring for a child in out of home care. However, ‘foster parenting’ and ‘foster parent’ are commonly used terms in other jurisdictions.

In that context, ‘foster parenting’ means to offer a safe and stable home to children and young people in foster care. The aim of foster parenting in Western Australia would therefore be to reunite children with their birth families, provide them with long term stability or to assist them towards independence.

Foster care, foster parent or foster parenting?

‘Foster parenting’ is a widely used phrase that many people are familiar with across the world, although on this website and in conversation we prefer the term ‘foster care’ as it more accurately reflects the role of the foster carer as a professional and not a parent.
